Bringing a Dog or Cat to Indonesia and Bali

Last reviewed October 2026 ยท By the PetStamp team ยท Not veterinary or legal advice

Indonesia's quarantine agency (Barantin) says a dog or cat from abroad needs a health certificate from the departure country's authority, a vaccination book, a protective rabies antibody test result, online registration and a prior notice filed before you leave, and must not come from a country with a current rabies outbreak. Bali is different: its own regulation bans bringing dogs and cats into the province, and we found no official repeal.

Step-by-step timeline

  1. 1+ month beforeMake sure the rabies vaccine is current and get a rabies antibody test. Ask Barantin which level and labs it accepts, because its public guidance does not say.
  2. Before you bookCheck your arrival point with Barantin. Indonesia designates which airports, seaports and border posts can receive animals, and the current list is in a 2025 decree we could not open.
  3. Days beforeHealth certificate from the official vet service of your departure country. Register on SSmQC and file the prior notice before departure; it is mandatory.
  4. ArrivalReport to the quarantine officers at the airport, seaport or border post and hand over the pet. If it is healthy, a quarantine vet issues a release certificate.

Dogs vs cats

Barantin treats dogs and cats the same, as animals that can carry rabies. Its public guidance names no breed bans, age limit or number limit; ask before you travel. Bali's regulation covers dogs, cats and monkeys alike.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog to Bali?

Bali Governor Regulation 88/2008 bans bringing dogs, cats and monkeys into the province, with no exception in the text for pets from abroad. It is still published by the Bali government and we found no repeal, so plan on not being able to bring a dog or cat to Bali.

Does Indonesia require a rabies titer test?

Yes. Barantin lists a protective rabies antibody test result among the documents. The minimum level and accepted labs are not stated in its public guidance, so confirm them with Barantin.

Can I take my cat from Jakarta to Bali?

No, under Bali's regulation. It bans bringing dogs and cats into Bali from other provinces as well as from abroad.

Why is this page less detailed than others?

Barantin's regulation and entry-point decree were not reachable when we checked, and we only publish rules we could read on an official page. Contact Barantin before you plan the trip.
